All potential mages must be tested against the Orb of Destiny. Each candidate must touch the orb to reveal whether they possess any magical abilities and whether they are light or dark in nature. Legend has it that the orb will destroy anybody who possesses magic so strong that it could be considered a threat to the natural order.
